FRAME Expert 2025 Workshop
Tuesday October 28, 2025 4:30pm - 6:00pm CET
FRAME is 15 years old!

FRAME is a training programme organized by INA since 2010 with the support of FIAT/IFTA and EBU Academy, and co-funded by the European Commission

In 15 years, 31 training sessions have been organised, gathering more than 300 participants and 200 speakers from more than 45 countries.

A lot has happened in 15 years: training formats have evolved, from one two-week training session to a comprehensive programme comprising 2 onsite and online training sessions, workshops, a mentoring programme and an e-learning platform; trainees have become trainers; the lockdown has passed through and led us to online training; training sessions were hosted in Ireland, the Netherlands, Romania or Italy; projects led by junior professionals have been supported...

Sharing and transmission are at the heart of FRAME and are part of its DNA. Sharing between peers, between institutions, transmission between experienced and junior professionals, between countries around the world, between former and new participants....

We propose to take the opportunity of this anniversary and of the lessons learned from FRAME to analyse together the issues of training in the audiovisual archives sector, for individuals, companies and professional associations.

1. The FRAME Expert workshop will be divided in two parts:
2. Stories of the FRAME Community

In this FRAME Expert session, we first propose you to look back on this 15-year adventure through the testimonies (onsite and online) of former participants, speakers and project managers, to discover the role that FRAME has played in their professional lives. Roundtable: We need to talk about training

Then, we will bring together professionals from different institutions, professional associations and partners of FRAME, and involve the audience in the reflection trough a participative animation, to question together the issues of transmission, sharing practices and training in the world of audiovisual archives.

Safeguarding Archives in Precarious Times: Strategic Choices for Technological and Political Autonomy
Tuesday October 28, 2025 4:30pm - 6:00pm CET
In times of political uncertainty—where democratic values are increasingly under pressure—public and independent media become especially vulnerable. Precisely in these moments, the role of archives becomes more vital than ever: to document, to preserve, and to provide context. Archives know that history is never singular nor neutral; it is shaped by those who record it. Today, more than ever, archives are called upon to act as custodians and safe havens of media heritage.

This growing responsibility raises urgent questions: How can we ensure the long-term safety and accessibility of our collections, regardless of political or technological shifts? What strategic decisions must we make to maintain autonomy over our infrastructure and data?

Technologically, the dominance of Big Tech—both in hardware and software—challenges our ability to maintain independence. AI companies are eager to access the vast datasets archives hold. But if we lean too heavily on commercial platforms, do we risk compromising our public values? On the other hand, can smaller, European-based alternatives scale up fast enough to handle the volumes and complexities we face?

At Sound & Vision, we’ve encountered these dilemmas firsthand. In this session, we’ll present real-world cases and frameworks that help inform decisions about infrastructure, partnerships, and digital sovereignty.

Just as critical—if not more so—are the political dimensions of autonomy. What does it take for archives to remain politically independent in increasingly polarized societies? And what strategic choices must be made today to ensure that media history remains preserved and accessible tomorrow?

Through concrete examples and an open discussion, we aim to equip participants with insights into the multifaceted choices that shape the future of archive management.
